A.I. Case Study

TERMINATOR GENISYS:

L to R - Comparison from current installment 'Genisys' to the orginal film

A.I. Concept: Traditional

  • Skynet is a global digital defense network that was developed for the U.S. military and therefore given command over all computerised military hardware and systems.
  • It gained self-awareness and the operators realising its capabilities tried to deactivate it. Skynet saw this as an attack and came to the conclusion that all of humanity would destroy it.
  • Judgement day - it launched nuclear missiles at Russia which responded in a nuclear counter-attack against the US and its allies.
Ironically Skynet has become an overarching global hierarchy which seeks to destroy humanity in order to fulfill its original purpose.

Metaphor:
Humans are self-destructive by nature

CHAPPiE:

'Chappie' portrayed as a child learning and developing

A.I. Concept: Pluralistic

  • Chappie's creator Deon Wilson cracked the algorithm that would give life to the broken down and rejected police robot unit.
He had no real intention or ulterior motive other than to create "a machine that can think and feel" - to allow it to develop and evolve on its own and more importantly become its own person.
  • "It's like a child. It has to learn." - Thus, 'Chappie' is essentially a 'coming of age' movie whereby audiences watch him grow up and learn (at an exponential rate) what it means to be human.
  • However, humans see artificial intelligence as a big potential threat when not constrained to programmed rules and laws - "The problem with artificial intelligence is that it's way too unpredictable" and that "a thinking robot could be the end of mankind."
Metaphor:
What humans create are reflections of themselves just as a child is a reflection of their parents.
